Membership FAQs

These are the most commonly asked questions regarding membership at Northern Golf Club.

What Happens Next?

NGC will acknowledge receipt of your application in writing and you will be placed on the membership waiting list. The waiting list is maintained in order of date of application. As soon as vacancies arise, new applicants will be invited to attend an induction meeting. It is suggested that new applicants bring to this meeting their proposer and seconder. Following the induction meeting your application will be posted on our clubs notice board for a period of 14 days and provided there are no objections from current members and on payment of your joining fee and subscription fee your membership will take effect.

For details about the current fee structure please contact the Club.

How Can I be nominated if I don’t know any Current NGC Members?

On receipt of your application the Club will arrange for you to be interviewed by 2 members of the Membership Committee. At this interview you may be required to provide the names of referees who can vouch for your character, in particular referees from any golf club of which you are currently, or have previously been, a member will be contacted. Based on this interview the Interviewers will decide if they are prepared to act as your proposer and seconder.

How Can I play the Course before deciding to apply for Membership?

If you have not had the opportunity to play Northern, as a guest of a current member or on some other occasion, you should contact the General Manager. The Club will arrange for you to play an introductory round of golf. On this round you will be accompanied by 2 members of the Membership Committee who will be able to show you the Club’s facilities and answer any questions you may have. You will be required to pay green fees.

What is covered at the Induction?

  • A Brief History of Northern Golf Club
  • The structure of the Club [the Board, Committees and the Management Team]
  • Facilities
  • Current Projects and Initiatives
  • Your Responsibilities as a Member
  • Dress Code
  • Etiquette
  • Maintenance of the course
  • Playing Rights
  • Booking Your Rounds
  • Obtaining / Transferring Your Official Handicap
  • Competitions
  • Golf Link
  • Golfer’s Insurance
  • Q and A

It is assumed that after this session and on payment of your fees, your proposer and/or seconder will help you organise your first round of golf as a member.

How long will I have to wait for Membership?

NGC needs to balance the priorities of maximising membership with the responsibility of ensuring that members have reasonable access to the course and get value for their fees. Therefore membership is capped and new members are only admitted when there are vacancies. Indicatively the NGC accepts between 35 and 60 new members each year. Whilst some vacancies will arise during the year, most occur in March of each year when membership renewals are due.  The delay in obtaining membership is dependent on the number of people, and your current position on the waiting list. Enquiries about the current waiting list and your position can be made to the Club at any time.

What happens if I defer My Membership?

On some occasions prospective candidates are contacted when they reach the top of the waiting list and for private reasons they wish to defer taking up the offer of membership at that time. In the event that you are unable to take up membership when offered, you should contact the Club and ask that your name be retained on the waiting list. It is important to know that in this event your position on the waiting list will be determined by the date you deferred rather than the date you applied. If there are extenuating circumstances that mean you can’t take up the offer for a specified period your position on the waiting list will be adjusted by changing your application date to the date that you believe you will be able to take up the offer of membership

It is also important to note that when your name coincides with a vacancy the Club will make every effort to contact you by phone, e-mail and/or post. If you not respond your name will be removed from the waiting list. It is your responsibility to ensure that NGC has your current contact details. If at a later time you contact the Club and want your name reinstated, your position on the waiting list will be determined by the date you re-contacted the club rather than your initial application date.
